Household waste remains a significant environmental challenge in residential areas, particularly in densely populated communities such as Neighborhood Unit (RW) 07, Jati Village, Jaten District, Karanganyar Regency. The increasing volume of household waste, both organic and inorganic, combined with limited waste sorting and processing practices, has contributed to environmental pollution and declining residential hygiene. This community service activity was conducted to enhance community knowledge, awareness, and practical skills related to the proper management of organic and inorganic waste at the household level.
The implementation method was carried out through several structured stages, including initial preparation and coordination with local stakeholders, community outreach and education on waste classification and environmental impacts, hands-on training in processing organic waste into compost using simple and applicable methods, and guidance on managing inorganic waste through sorting and utilization. Mentoring and evaluation were also conducted to assess community participation and the effectiveness of the activities.
The results indicate a noticeable improvement in residents’ understanding of waste separation at the source, as well as increased skills in organic waste composting and the utilization of inorganic waste with potential economic value. High levels of community participation throughout the activities demonstrate the program’s effectiveness. This community service activity is expected to promote sustainable, community-based waste management practices and contribute to the creation of a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible residential environment.
